East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust
This year, a Royal College of Physicians report named William Harvey Hospital, Ashford, as one of the best hospitals in the country for stroke care. The Trust, which was last year named by Dr. Foster Intelligence at the ‘Trust of the Year’ in 2010, has also secured the services of the most highly-skilled surgical hands on the planet - the DaVinci robot is being used to operate on prostate cancer at Kent & Canterbury Hospital. It can perform incredibly complex and precise operations.

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
UCLH has the third lowest mortality rate in the UK. The Trust was among four across the country to receive the 2011 Dr Foster Intelligence accolade, and the NHS Litigation Authority gave UCLH its level 3 rating, saving nearly £600,000 on insurance premiums. A successful partnership with University College London ensured the Trust received £100 million of funding for biomedical research from the National Institute for Health Research.
Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust
This years’ numerous achievements by TEWV include the opening of Roseberry Park, Teesside’s newest mental health and learning disability facility. In an NHS first, the Trust bought back West Park Hospital in Darlington from the PFI contractor. After reviewing costs, it decided to take advantage of a break clause to end the contract early. This year, the Trust has also received awards for its contributions to the NHS from Nursing Times, Health Service Journal and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
Monitor found DCHFT in breach of its terms of authorisation as a foundation trust in 2009 due to the Trust’s serious ongoing financial position. Since then the Trust has appointed a new permanent executive team and has been making savings while maintaining quality care for patients. The Trust was facing a deficit of £5.1million at the end of 2009/10. It ended 2010/11 with a £3.3million deficit and is predicting a surplus of £700,000 for the end of 2011/12.
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
In September this year, Cambridge opened Cambridge IVF – a new purpose-built assisted conception unit. The Trust was identified as the top hospital in the Midlands and East Anglia by Doctor Foster Intelligence and as one of the country’s top 40 hospitals by CHKS. Earlier in the Year, CUH’s Eye Unit was awarded ‘Visibly Better’ accreditation by the RNIB for providing an excellent service to patients with visual impairments.

2010 Winner: Airedale NHS Foundation Trust
Airedale achieved Foundation trust status in June this year, and continues to deliver an outstanding level of care for patients across West Yorkshire. The trust was recently commended at the National Patient Safety Awards for two projects, which involved data collection and surgical safety briefings. In November this year, Airedale was named 'Small Hospital Trust of the Year’ in the Dr Foster Hospital Guide for the fourth time in the last five years.

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust
The Christie has been at the forefront of the fight against cancer for the past 100 years, and works closely with the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, the University of Manchester, Cancer Research UK and the Wolfson Medical Imaging Centre. November this year saw the Christie open the largest phase I clinical trials unit in the world. Housed in a brand new £35 million three storey building, it is able to offer over 200 clinical trials at any one time.
University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
Birmingham’s newest hospital, the Queen Elizabeth in Edgbaston, opened to patients in June this year. The development has 1,213 beds and boasts both the largest single critical care unit and the biggest solid organ transplant programme in Europe. The Trust has been home to the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine since 2001, and was recently praised by the National Audit Office for the 'unrivalled expertise' it offers in caring for military patients.
Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust
Since 2006, the financial performance at Royal Wolverhampton has improved, with turnover increased by £90 million in five years. The Trust’s orthopaedic team was shortlisted for the Efficiency Initiative of the Year at the 2010 HSJ Awards for introducing a series of administrative changes which freed up theatres and saved over £1m. First class infection control procedures are highlighted by the fact that in August this year, the Trust had achieved 400 days MRSA free, which sets a record amongst large Acute trusts in England and Wales.
Alder Hey Children's NHS Foundation Trust
Alder Hey continues to enjoy a world class reputation for paediatric care. Recent achievements include the opening of its state-of-the-art designated Burns Unit, Europe’s first intra-operative 3-T MRI scanner, and becoming the UK's first centre of excellence for treating Childhood Lupus. The ‘Alder Hey At’ service brings patient care closer to their homes. Partnering with NHS Knowsley, world class Paediatricians can now be seen at four centres throughout West Derby.
