Since 1997, the NHS has seen a huge investment in its fabric - the biggest hospital building programme in its history. This award will be made to the new hospital building project that raises the standard of the healthcare environment and demonstrates value for money and project management excellence.

2011 Winner

St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust - Whiston Hospital
The new six-storey horseshoe-shaped Whiston Hospital is light and spacious, and has been designed with input from clinical staff and patients. The hospital has 15 state of the art operating theatres along with the very latest diagnostic facilities. Related clinical departments are situated close together.Colourful artwork of the seaside, parks and animals, designed by students, brightens up the children’s wards. Every floor has a different colour to prevent patients getting lost.

Peterborough and Stamford NHS Trust - Peterborough City Hospital
Construction of the 612-bed Peterborough City hospital in Bretton Gate was completed in early October - three months ahead of the original schedule. It is one of the largest privately financed building initiatives undertaken within the National Health Service, spanning 95,000 square metres - the equivalent of 13 Wembley football pitches. It has 18 operating theatres, a critical care unit, an emergency centre and an expanded cardiac unit. It will also offer services for cancer patients not previously available in Peterborough.

Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust - Pembury Hospital
The Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Pembury, Kent is the first NHS all single room 513 bed District General Hospital in the UK. The hospital has been designed to take advantage of the difficult natural sloping site by having three floors to the North and six/seven floors to the South. The majority of the single rooms take advantage of magnificent views across the surrounding woodland areas and and sites of special scientific interest. The design also incorporates features for patient safety and effective infection control.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde - Stobhill Hospital

The £100 million New Stobhill Hospital, officially opened in 2010, will transform the balance of care from inpatient overnight procedures, allowing thousands of minor surgery patients to return home on the day of their operation. Twelve 23-hour short stay surgical beds also support the work at the hospital, enabling clinicians to extend the range of surgical procedures offered. Movement sensitive light systems have been installed throughout and floor coverings have been made from renewable materials.

2010 Winner

Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital

With 371 beds, including 17 intensive care and 12 high-dependencies, the RMCH is the largest single-site children’s hospital in the UK. It replaces two children’s hospitals  at Pendlebury and Booth Hall, and unites them in a single building. Despite its size, RMCH has been designed to retain a sense of the human-scale, thus minimising the anxiety of patients and families crossing the hospital threshold for the first time.

Southmead Hospital Learning & Research Centre

North Bristol NHS Trust's Learning and Research Building combines a centre for staff education and a research centre for the University of Bristol. The building integrates training suites particular to resuscitation, clinical skills, manual handling and IT, as well as custom laboratory facilities. It is the first phase in Southmead's new hospital development, which is planned for completion in 2014.

University Hospitals Bristol NHS Trust's new Heart Institute has been designed in partnership with patients, staff and the public and delivers a full range of diagnostic and interventional treatments for heart conditions, including primary angioplasty, to the people in the South West and beyond. The state of the art £57m centre unites cardiology and cardiac surgery as well as cardiac imaging and cardiac research.

Braintree Community Hospital

The Braintree Community Hospital, which opened it's doors in April, replaces St. Michael's Hospital and combines two operating theatres, inpatient bedrooms, therapies, imaging and outpatient services. It is one of the first community hospitals to provide day case surgery and diagnostic tests including x-ray, ultrasound and endoscopy. A hospital cafe, run by a local company, produces freshly cooked, locally sourced, organic food on-site for patients, staff and visitors.

Forth Valley Royal Hospital

The aim was to bring acute and emergency services together on a single site in a modern, purpose-built facility which would meet the needs of patients, visitors and staff. Forth Valley provides eight hundred beds, fifty percent in single bedrooms, sixteen operating theatres with full supporting facilities, a women and children's hospital and a linked mental health facility. Emphasis was placed on accessibility and control of infection, and it is one of the most well equipped hospitals in Europe.
